The recent news that Iceland is permitting the siting of salmon farms at the mouths of pristine run Salmon rivers is enough to send a chill through anyone who is concerned over the long term environmental impact of Salmon farming. Iceland is one of the last great clean river eco systems and this move near the mouth of the River Haffjardara, will threaten the purity of the water and the fish stocks that run these rivers. How much more evidence needs to be produced by government sponsored reviews to conclude that Salmon farming is an ecological disaster. In this world of climate change and environmental pressure groups, mass commercial Salmon farming continues to ignore concerns over water purity, bio mass degradation and the devastating pollution of hitherto crystal waterways. The impact will be felt economically and could erode Icelands reputation as one of the few remaining great natural wildernesses in Northern Europe.
